The Lecture Details!
Demystifying Pediatric Therapy for Pelvic Pain in Boys-simple solutions with great outcomes
Laura McGuckin (PT, MPT, WCS, CLT)
This lecture will cover common causes of pediatric pain in young boys through adolescents, current research, evaluation outline, treatment ideas and presentation of several case studies. Gain an understanding about how pediatric pelvic health therapists have a unique skill set to successfully treat this population.
How to Work with an Autistic Child in a Therapy Session
Maureen Bennie
When working with autistic children, either undiagnosed or diagnosed, it is helpful to have an understanding of autistic neurology/thinking, know the level of interoceptive awareness, and recognize the need for predictability which lessens anxiety. To best support this population, we need to use visuals, provide a structured environment, and assess behaviors of concern that may arise in therapy, all while building a trusting relationship with the child. This presentation will explore ways for therapists to support autistic children in their practice by increasing their knowledge of autism, developing an understanding of autistic traits and how that affects therapeutic interventions, creating and using visual supports, evaluating sensory needs, designing for predictability, and implementing the Low Arousal Approach to support anxious or stressed children.
Linking voicing, breathing, and postural control all the way down to the pelvic floor
Dr. Mary Massery (PT, DPT, DSc)
This lecture proposes a new definition of “core stability;” redefining it as the dynamic control of trunk pressures to optimize postural stability (balance). Dr. Massery will present novel research demonstrating the role of vocal folds as a critical component of normal balance and power strategies. She will define the 3 horizontal valves of the trunk (vocal folds, diaphragm and pelvic floor) that manage trunk pressures for internal organ health as well as balance, and she will present the five major roles of the diaphragm; 1) breathing (of course), 2) contributing to postural stability, 3) minimizing reflux forces, 4) enhancing bowel motility, and 5) aiding in venous return. As a pelvic health therapist, you’ll never look at the diaphragm and vocal folds as “just respiratory muscles” again!
Anorectal MalforWHAT?! Unveiling the truth about pelvic therapy treatment
Dr. Sarah Fox
This interactive presentation will address Anorectal malformations pre and post operatively, the role of pelvic health in these phases as well as across the pediatric lifespan of the diagnosis. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how critical pelvic therapy can be for this population, where to start and how to help them achieve the goal of continence.
Retained Primitive Reflexes in the Pediatric Patient and Its Impact on Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Dr. Ashlee Snyder Cox (OTD, OTR/L)
In this lecture participants will learn about the relationship between retained primitive reflexes and pelvic floor dysfunction in pediatric pelvic health patients, how to test for specific primitive reflexes, and how to integrate primitive reflexes in patients that are retained, in order to improve function with toileting and bowel and bladder management.
Connecting to the Sensation in Pelvic Floor Therapy
Anna Miller (OTR/L, ATP)
Sensory differences can impact all the systems involved in pediatric pelvic health and can make toilet learning, bowel and bladder control, and overcoming pelvic floor dysfunction challenging. This lecture will explore how therapists can identify these concerns and make their pediatric pelvic health patients’ experience more comfortable and safe.
BONUS: Rehabilitative Ultrasound in a Pediatric Patient
Ramona Horton (MPT, DPT)
This lecture will review the indications for Rehabilitation Ultrasound (RUS) use in pediatrics including measuring rectal diameter, bladder volumes and post void residuals as well as using RUS for neuromuscular re-education.
BONUS: To Clean out or not to Clean out; That is the Question!
Dawn Sandalcidi (PT, RCMT, BCB-PMD)
To Clean out or not Clean out: That is the question. Determining when to recommend a bowel clean out for a patient involves assessing specific clinical indications and symptoms. This lecture reviews indications for clean outs as well as other options for a clean out.
