The Lecture Details!

Dr. Caroline Corning Creager, PT, DPT

Is There a Zebra in Your Room?: Recognizing and Identifying Incontinence Issues in the Pediatric Population with Joint Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS)?:

Do you ever feel like you’re missing a critical piece of the puzzle when diagnosing and treating pediatric patients? Join us for an enlightening CME lecture, “Is There a Zebra in Your Room?: Recognizing and Identifying Incontinence Issues in the Pediatric Population with Joint Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS).” This session will help you identify the often-overlooked signs of joint hypermobility and EDS—common yet frequently underdiagnosed connective tissue disorders.

This course delves into the complex relationship between joint hypermobility/EDS and pediatric incontinence. You’ll learn how pelvic floor dysfunction, connective tissue laxity, and autonomic nervous system dysregulation can contribute to both urinary and fecal incontinence.

We’ll explore the multisystemic nature of these conditions and examine contributing factors such as sensory integration delays, muscle hypotonia, joint pain, and core instability. The lecture will also cover associated conditions that may exacerbate incontinence, including tethered cord, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), cervical instability, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, and pelvic organ prolapse.

By the end of this session, clinicians will be better equipped to recognize, assess, and manage incontinence in pediatric patients with connective tissue disorders—ensuring these “zebra” diagnoses don’t go unnoticed.

Dr. Caroline Corning Creager, PT, DPT owns Physical Therapy Doctors, Inc and the Berthoud Athletic Club in Berthoud, Colorado. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Montana and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado. Dr. Creager has written eight books including Therapeutic Exercises Using the Swiss Ball, Therapeutic Exercises Using Foam Rollers, Therapeutic Exercises Using Resistive Bands, and Bounce Back Into Shape After Baby. She teaches webinars; lectures nationally and internationally on Neuro-Orthopedic, Pelvic Health, kinesiology taping, and core strength topics; and specializes in Neuro-Orthopedics, including intracranial hypotension due to CSF leaks, intracranial hypertension/venous outflow disorders, Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes, Chiari and tethered cord.

Jean Anne Zollars, PT, DPT, MA, BI-D

Managing constipation or colic in infants and toddlers:

In this session, we will learn of the various factors that can influence healthy digestion and elimination in infants and toddlers, particularly when managing constipation and colic. In addition to reviewing the anatomy of the digestive system, and nutrition, we will look at how the autonomic nervous system regulation of both the child and the parents affects digestion. Manual therapy in the form of Visceral Manipulation for infants and children will be introduced as well as methods to assist with autonomic nervous system regulation, incorporating the polyvagal theory. Nutritional guidelines will be provided to give to parents.

Jean Anne Zollars, PT, DPT, MA, BI-D, treats infants, children and adults in her private practice in Albuquerque, NM. She is also an instructor for the Barral Institute teaching Visceral and Neuromeningeal Manipulation and Visceral Applications for Pediatrics. She recently published 2 volumes of Pediatric Manual Therapy: Visceral and Neuromeningeal Manipulation through Barral Productions. Jean Anne graduated from the physical therapy program at Ithaca College in 1982, was trained in Neurodevelopmental Treatment in 1988, and in 1991, received her Masters of Arts degree in rehabilitation technology from San Francisco State University. In 2014, she received her DPT from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

Lucy Charles, New Zealand Occupational Therapist

Relational and Coaching Approaches to Bladder and Bowel Care: Hearing the Child, Holding the Family:
This session introduces a multidisciplinary, relational, and coaching-based approach to bladder and bowel care that centres the voice of the child and the capacity of the family. Drawing on the F-Words for Child Development (Rosenbaum & Gorter, 2012) and the F-Words Life Wheel (Charles & Hamill, 2020), this approach ensures support is intrinsically motivating, values-based, culturally relevant, and deeply personalised.

Incorporating a multidisciplinary lens—including sensory, cognitive, emotional, and environmental factors, as well as neurodivergence—participants will take away practical strategies to foster relational safety, autonomy, and dignity in the continence journey

Lucy Charles is a New Zealand based Occupational Therapist with over 30 years of experience journeying alongside children and families with developmental needs. She co-founded Paediatric Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy NZ, an independent practice with Arul Hamill. Within the practice there is a specialist bladder and bowel team including physiotherapists: Merryn Robertson and Sally Parton, and Occupational Therapist: Ursula Gee. The team have had the privilege of being trained and mentored by Dawn Sandalcidi.

A core to their practice is the use of the F-Words Life Wheel, a coaching approach they developed in

and published in 2020 in collaboration with CanChild (Canada). The F-words and the Life Wheel ensures that children and families’ goals are aligned and that there is intrinsic motivation towards bowel and bladder management. They use coaching approaches to ensure that the family and child are empowered in terms of knowledge, understanding, autonomy and culturally appropriate implementation of strategies. Using a multi-systems approach including physical, sensory, cognitive, physiological, and social emotional supports, and ensuring that everyone hears the voice of the child, as tapping into what is important to them can be a turning point for success alongside connection and validation for families on what can be a long and difficult journey.

Lucy and Arul have been involved in research projects in New Zealand and Canada and have presented and taught the F-Words Life Wheel and Occupational Performance Coaching, a coaching approach developed by Doctor Fiona Graham, internationally.
