Here is What You Will Learn!

This course is designed to get you started in your journey working with children suffering from bowel and/or bladder issues. Constipation, encopresis (fecal incontinence), enuresis (bedwetting), dysfunctional voiding and MORE!

You will learn techniques to be able to see your first patient as soon as you finish the course. Detailed manual therapy, SEMG Biofeedback and Rehabilitative Ultrasound video demonstrations included. No need to purchase fancy equipment to start!

Experience Required!

Many of you come from different areas of specialty, some pediatric therapists, some pelvic health therapists. Whether you are a "seasoned" pelvic therapist or have NEVER worked with the pelvic floor before this course is designed for you!

Children are not small adults and need specialized care. They are waiting for you!!

Why Take Peds Level 1 - Pediatric Bowel and Bladder Disorders?

According to the International Children’s Continence Society (ICCS), typically developing children are expected to achieve both daytime and nighttime bladder control by the age of 6. Failure to achieve this milestone is associated with significant psychosocial consequences for both the child and family, including increased anxiety, frustration, reduced self-esteem, and the development of internalizing and externalizing behaviors.

The most common pelvic floor dysfunctions in the pediatric population include dysfunctional elimination syndrome, urinary withholding, recurrent urinary tract infections, nocturnal enuresis, and fecal incontinence. Constipation is a major contributing factor to urinary urgency, leakage, and bedwetting and accounts for approximately 5% of pediatric primary care visits. Despite the prevalence and long-term implications of pediatric bowel and bladder dysfunction, this population remains significantly underserved.

This course focuses on the evaluation and treatment of pediatric patients with daytime and/or nighttime urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and dysfunctional voiding patterns. Children with special needs, sensory processing disorders, and musculoskeletal asymmetries are at increased risk for developing maladaptive bowel and bladder habits, including chronic constipation.

Because pediatric bladder and bowel dysfunction frequently persists into adulthood, early identification and intervention are essential. Pelvic rehabilitation providers play a critical role in improving long-term continence outcomes and quality of life for these patients.

This course begins with a review of pediatric pelvic anatomy and physiology, including the development of normal voiding reflexes and continence. Common medical and behavioral contributors to pediatric incontinence are examined. Participants will learn comprehensive medical and therapy-based evaluation strategies for bowel and bladder dysfunction, nocturnal enuresis, and constipation.

Instruction will include a multimodal approach to assessment and treatment, incorporating video demonstrations of pelvic floor evaluation using surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback, rehabilitative ultrasound imaging, and pediatric-specific external pelvic floor manual techniques to facilitate coordinated evacuation. Case studies will be integrated throughout the course to illustrate clinical reasoning, diagnosis-based intervention selection, progression of care, and discharge planning.

Educational Relevance

Despite the high prevalence of pediatric bowel and bladder dysfunction, many rehabilitation providers report limited formal training in pediatric pelvic health. This course addresses a critical practice gap by providing evidence-informed evaluation and treatment strategies to improve continence outcomes and quality of life for pediatric patients and their families in addition to providing medical- legal support for yourself and your patients.

Course Prerequisite

This course is a beginning level course and appropriate for physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapist assistants, pediatric nurse practitioners and medical doctors and other health care professionals interested in expanding their practice in pediatric bowel and bladder disorders.

Content is not intended for use outside the scope of the learner's license or regulation. Physical therapy continuing education courses should not be taken by individuals who are not licensed or otherwise regulated, except, as they are involved in a specific plan of care.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this continuing education seminar, participants will be able to:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe pediatric pelvic floor anatomy, physiology, and the neurodevelopment of normal voiding and continence.
  2. Identify common pediatric pelvic floor dysfunctions, including dysfunctional elimination syndrome, urinary withholding, nocturnal enuresis, and fecal incontinence.
  3. Explain the relationship between constipation and urinary symptoms such as urgency, leakage, and bedwetting.
  4. Differentiate typical versus atypical bladder and bowel development based on ICCS guidelines.
  5. Apply medical and therapy-based evaluation concepts for pediatric bowel and bladder dysfunction.
  6. Interpret surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback and rehabilitative ultrasound imaging findings in pediatric pelvic floor assessment.
  7. Demonstrate appropriate use of pediatric-specific external pelvic floor manual techniques to support coordinated voiding and evacuation.
  8. Develop diagnosis-driven treatment plans for children with bowel and bladder dysfunction using a comprehensive, family-centered approach.
  9. Integrate case-based clinical reasoning to progress treatment and determine readiness for discharge.

Course Outcomes

Here's What People Are Saying About the Course

"I recently attended the pediatric incontinence course and I will say it’s the best course I’ve been to by far. I have been able to take the information taught and literally apply some or all of it to all my pelvic floor patients, young and old; as well as my general orthopedic and neuro patients I see. I always say if I can get one usable nugget to apply to a portion of my patients, then the course was well worth it. I got many "nuggets" of info and interventions from your course that I was able to apply to ALL my patients, not just a portion! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!"

"It is not very often that you find a role model and colleague that inspires you to be a better person both clinically as well as in day to day life. Dawn has changed the way that I will practice pelvic health. The knowledge will be passed down to many future children that I hope to help."
